EQUITY ≠ SACRIFICE
I.D.E.A.
Inclusion Diversity Equity & Access
Navigating the space for all students is critical.
It is important to know and understand the difference between culture and climate.
Culture is the makeup of your school community. Our multiple backgrounds, ethnicities, geographic make-up, and more contribute to culture.
Climate is....what you allow!
The Equity Continuum
Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, & Access - social justice doesn’t happen with a new course on race and diversity. These happen when the voice of the people in the community are honored and embedded into the fabric of what you do. Deepening cultural competence takes place in safe spaces with intentional outcomes based on objectivity.
Reduce implicit bias;
Demystify “culture and ethnic studies”;
Use student voice & choice to celebrate diversity;
Develop objective approaches to behavior rehabilitation;
Refute negative narratives and advocate diversity.
All of this is supported by the data below which suggests drastic change is needed to ensure I.D.E.A. is at the forefront of education.
High school dropout rates, suspension rates and incarceration rates of Black /African-American and Latino students demonstrate the inequities rather starkly. Ladson-Billings & Tate (1995).
By 2044, groups formerly seen as “minorities” will reach majority status
By 2065, the U.S. Population will not have any single ethnic or racial majorities
By 2025 Millenials are predicted to make up 75% of the workforce
44.2% of Millenials classify themselves as non-Caucasian
Millenials are 16% more diverse than Baby Boomers
Racially & ethnically diverse companies are 35% more likely to perform better
Diverse teams are 87% better at making decisions
The time Black/African American Students and Economically Disadvantaged Students spend during in-person instruction impacts their performance.
